This picture of USS Virginia was taken off of Virginia Beach on December 10th, 1993 as she steamed home from her final cruise (a three month deployment to the Caribbean for Counter Narcotics Operations). Within a year after this picture was taken, both reactors were defueled, both propusion plants were deactivated, and the superstructure removed and sold for scrap. This all happened during an eight month decommissioning availability in drydock #4 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. In the Spring of 1995, what was left of the ship was towed through the Panama Canal and laid up for storage in Washington.
