Chief Harding. He came on board in 1991 during Desert Storm, he flew
with my husband and another shipmate to Bahrain in February 91 and this
information is not documented in the service records of Steve and the
other shipmate. Sr Chief could be the missing link. Would like to know
if he is sick with anything unusual. Any help would be greatly

anyone else who is sick with an organic brain disease, cancer or other

what medals you are suppose to have, but unfortunately you did not get
the money due because I was told to shut up or they would bust Iain out
of the Navy by the captain. With four kids, one of which was very sick,
I could not risk that. You deserved it all and I would fight again in a

to catch the ship? Steve says the ship secretary and one other person
flew with him on a plane with munitions that had to be emergency landed.
We need some more information about that trip and Steve doesn't have the
memory any more. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This was a time
when the ship was suppose to go to the gulf and couldn't because of a
nuke inspection failure of some sort. Please get in contact with me if
you have any information at all at: 937-615-1131.

- I served from 1978-1981. Fun reading back through all the past
messages. I saw one post that took credit for blowing the starboard door
off in a gun shoot. That was legend even up until I left. Right up there
along with our crew dropping a bird in the magazine. The sea stories
section also bring back memories especially the one about our sonar dome
damage. Amazing how all the details were kept from us. But the
Philipines was the greatest port visit we ever had due to that event.
But that was after the horrible stay in oman. Hello to the guys I hung
around most with... Marty C., Craig W. & Larry K. Capt. Ailes made
flag rank? You kidding me? I never would have thought it possible
considering some of the mishaps.

- Like the others who served with Brian Mclaughlin I would like to
express my sadness at learning of his passing. Brian was a great
shipmate and true friend. Brian and I were usually in the same watch
section and spent many hours together in DC Central playing cards,
reading books, shootin the shit, and all the other things you aint
supposed to do on watch in DC Central. One thing I remember about Brian
was his great sense of humor. He was always playing practical jokes on
his shipmates. I remember one time that another shipmate was sleeping in
the r div lounge and Brian put cheeze wiz on two ritz crackers and stuck
them to the poor fellows eye glasses. What a hoot Brian was. I will
never forget him.

- It is with great sadness that I am making this post. I just want to
let all of you know that I recentlty became aware that a great shipmate
and friend, HT2 Brian Mclaughlin who served in R_Div from 1980 - 1984
passed away. Actually after many attmepts of trying to locate Brian over
the past few years I made contact with his family. His 16 year old
daughter wrote to tell me that he passed away 6 years ago. I last spoke
with him around the late 80's when he was stationed in Pearl Harbor.
This news came as a complete shock to me as it has to some others I have
personally e-mailed. We will all remember him and the great times we had
together. "God Bless You Brian, Rest in Peace. Thanks for always being
there for me when I needed a friend. My only regret is we lost touch and
never made contact again"

After that I wasn't recommended for advancement or reenlistment. (That
is until I told them I was leaving.) I vowed then that I had had enough
fun working for others and set out on my own. Glad I did and glad those
guys pushed me like they did back then. Otherwise I'd probably be doing
some meaningless job collecting a paycheck and waiting for retirement.
Thanks Klinedog, Bergie, Wachy and all you other guys who
thought I was pretty irresponsible insubordinate. You were right and I'd

- A proud memeber of the crew of the U.S.S. Virginia! GMM2 on the
forward launcher 1/1981 to 6/1984. It's been great to read so many
stories about the ol' girl. Sure do miss her! We experienced so much
during those years. I could tell you stories! It hurt to see the demo
pictures. I have a question, who or when did they start calling her the
"Pig"? All of my fellow shipmates would like to know. It sounds like her
reputation went downhill after we left.

- Hello everyone, how are things going. I just happened to stumble
across this site and wish I had known about it sooner. It is a shame
that the Virginia that I know is no longer with us. I have lots of great
memories of the fun we had and the people I got to know. I served on the
Virginia from 1987 to 1989 and was on both the 87 and 89 Med Cruises.
Can't beat the fake fantail fire, moon ship day, and some of the other
interesting times. I was assigned to Deck Division for the first year
then made it out to Navigation for the remainder of my time on the ship.
I am know working in Wilmington, DE as a police officer and have been
doing that for the last 11 years. This is an awesome site and hope to
hear from some of my fellow shipmates so we can keep in
touch.

- GMM2 (Aft Launcher Captain) served 1981-1985 during which time the
Virginia opened fire in Beirut, Lebanon and some of us went ashore after
the Beirut Hilton bombing to help recover the bodies of the Marines. I
had a memorial airbrushed onto my Harley remembering the fallen, which
made it into Easyriders magazine. Left the ship just before it completed
overhaul, and went into the aerospace industry before switching to law
enforcement. Am now the Disciplinary Officer at Maine's SuperMax state
prison. I have remained in contact with GMM2 Art Wall and GMG2 Gary
Freeburg all these years later. They told me about this site today when
we all met in Gloucester, Massachusetts for a deep sea fishing charter.
Put me on a mailing list for any reunion plans !!

- Great to see so many familiar names. I was EMO from 86-90. What a
great ship. Anyone remember ETC Putz? Best chief I ever worked with. I
still see folks from those great days. Ralph Janikowski, the Cheng, is a
CAPT and works in the Pentagon for OPNAV. Saw Dan Weed recently, also a
Captain. Eric Moss is still around, also a Captain.
Getting
ready to retire next month. After 31 years and six ships, Virginia is
remembered as the absolute best.
I am looking for DeShazo, he
was a BM who I convinced to reenlist. Wonder what ever happened to him.
Would anyone have a line on a Ship Identification Mark? The
rocker used on the sleeve of the enlisted uniform. It would mean so much
if I could include one in my shadow box.
Great web

decom in RC Div. Seems like RC Div was continuously repairing equipment
to keep the plants up. Can't say that I miss the time we spent at sea
(seems like we were never home) but I do miss the people. Even the
mechanics who turned my recently acquired anchors upside down just prior
to me having to talk to the CO about another RC equipment problem.
Should have never left my shirt unattended. Needless to say, I checked
it everytime after that!

- I just noticed an entry from James A. Arnold, posted on this log in
1992. Like me he was a plankowner in OD (deck) Div. in 1976. One of our
hilarious and rebellious "colleagues," Dirk Lutzweiler, made it a habit
to always say the same thing whenever he saw Arnold: "Arnold J. Lover...
Always has a hard on." I suppose it was because we all knew that Arnold,
unlike the rest of us, had a bona fide girlfriend living nearby. Made no
sense then, makes none now. Still cracks me up.
Does anyone
remember the name of the two-foot-tall, Jewish lieutenant who served on
the Virginia in those days? I always had the impression that his primary
goal in life was to prove to the world that he wasn't simply a
one-dimensional cartoon character. No offense intended, of
course. |

- Served @90-93 as 3MC. I just whanted to let anyone who might
remember him know that a well respected shipmate has passed on...
MSCM(SS/SW) Rusty Malbon (Command Master Chief prior to "Hoots" Mamanus)
died on 20 November 2004 after a four year fight with cancer. Master
Chief Malbon had the fondest memories of the Virginia crew as I am sure
that all who knew and served with him will remember him with their
fondest memories.

- Iwas onboard from '92 to the end. Sad to see the picture of her now.
When I left, the superstructure was down to the 01 level. It still seems
ironic that the last drug bust was the MV Virginia. I'm glad that I was
in the CS office during the deactivation ceremony, what with as cold as
it was outside. If anyone remembers that beard growing contest during
the last cruise, I won for the grayest, in spite of some tough
competion.

cruise, the first med cruise for her, north atlantic, an IO cruise and
various cruises to the caribbean. served under both Capt Davis and

was so short. would like to hear from some of my other shipmates,

- This is what I get for getting nostalgic in front of a web browser!
I served on the warpig from early '90 to late '92 in OI Div and remember
many a good and bad time, but mostly remember the crazy guys I sailed
with, some of whom have signed this log, also. Thanks to Mr. Huston for
maintaining this site, although it was painful to see pictures of the
old girl sitting in her grave, after having spilled so much sweat and
blood onto her haze grey hull. To all my shipmates, and especially my
fellow scope-dopes, I raise my glass in toast and wish you fair winds
and following seas wherever you may be!
